How to price baked goods
Home bakers underprice more consistently than any other maker, because the ingredients feel cheap and familiar. A dozen cookies might hold three dollars of flour, butter and sugar, so charging fifteen dollars feels almost greedy. Then you count the three hours of mixing, chilling, portioning, baking in batches, cooling, decorating and boxing, plus an oven that ran the whole time, and fifteen starts to look thin.
Total the batch first: every ingredient at what you actually paid, the boxes and liners and stickers, your labor for the whole session, and an overhead percentage. Divide by the number of items you can sell, then multiply. Baking often works better at a slightly lower multiplier than other crafts, around three to three and a half times cost, because volumes are higher and buyers compare against supermarket prices.
Bulk pricing is where the arithmetic gets fiddly, and it's exactly what this calculator is for. Say you bought a five pound bag of flour for $4.29 and used twelve ounces. Enter the bag price and the bag size, then the amount your recipe uses, and the per-ounce math happens for you.
Your oven is expensive
Most makers can get away with ten to twelve percent overhead. Bakers usually can't. An oven at 350°F for three hours, a stand mixer, a fridge holding chilled dough and the washing up afterwards add up to real electricity, and unlike a candle pourer's melting pot, your equipment runs for the entire session.
Fifteen percent is a sensible starting point, and go higher if you're running a double oven or baking all day. It's a small number that protects a lot of margin once you're selling hundreds of items.
Decorated items are a different product
A plain sugar cookie and an iced, hand-piped one share an ingredient list and nothing else. The icing adds pennies. The piping adds minutes per cookie, and minutes per cookie multiplied across four dozen is most of a working day.

Before you sell: check your local rules
Selling food from home is governed by cottage food laws, and they vary enormously by country, state and county. They control what you may sell, where you may sell it, how much you may earn and what your label must say. Some places require a registration or a food safety certificate, and some prohibit anything that needs refrigeration.
We handle the pricing and nothing else. This calculator has no opinion on allergen labeling, nutrition panels or licensing. Check your local cottage food rules before your first sale, because a pricing spreadsheet is no defense against a health inspector.
Questions makers ask
How much should I charge for homemade cookies?
Work out your true cost per cookie and multiply by three to three and a half. A simply decorated sugar cookie costs $0.80 to $2.00 to make once you include ingredients, packaging and your decorating time, putting retail around $3 to $7 each; detailed hand-piped designs cost several times that in decorating hours alone. Plain drop cookies sit far lower and are usually sold by the half-dozen or dozen.
How do I calculate ingredient cost per recipe?
Take the price of the whole package and divide by how much is in it. A $4.29 five pound bag of flour comes to about $0.054 an ounce. Then multiply by the amount your recipe uses. What overhead percentage should a home baker use?
Around 15%, which is higher than most crafts. Ovens run for hours at high heat, mixers and fridges draw power, and there's real wear on tins, mats and parchment. If you bake all day or run more than one oven, go higher.
How should I price custom cakes and decorated orders?
Price them as their own product, not as a surcharge on a plain one. The ingredients barely change but the labor multiplies. Piping, fondant work and assembly can take hours. Enter the real hours for that specific order and let the calculator show you the true cost before you quote.
Should I charge less because ingredients are cheap?
No. Your customer is buying finished, decorated, boxed baked goods, not flour. Cheap ingredients plus expensive labor is the normal shape of this business, and pricing off ingredients alone is why so many home bakers work an entire weekend for less than minimum wage.
Do I need a license to sell baked goods from home?
It depends entirely on where you live. Cottage food laws differ by country, state and county, and they control what you can sell, where, how much you can earn and what your labels must show. Check your local rules before your first sale. This calculator handles pricing only and has no view on food safety or licensing.
Should I match supermarket prices for baked goods?
No, because you'll lose every time, and you're not selling the same product anyway. Supermarkets bake industrially at a scale you can't match, while your buyer is choosing you for freshness, flavour and the fact that a person made it.
