How to price resin art
Resin makers underprice for a specific reason: the resin itself is the cheapest part of the job. A coaster might hold three dollars of epoxy and forty minutes of your attention once you count mixing, pouring, popping bubbles, waiting, demolding, sanding the edges and polishing. If you price off the epoxy alone, you've priced a material, not a finished piece of work.
Total the batch first: resin and hardener, pigments and micas, glitter or inclusions, the mold's share of the cost, gloves and mixing cups, then your labor for the whole pour and an overhead percentage. Divide by the number of finished pieces you can sell, then multiply. Four times cost is the usual handmade retail markup.
Count your labor across the whole cycle, not just the pour. Mixing takes ten minutes. The finishing is where the hours go, and if you're sanding and polishing every edge by hand, that time is most of what the customer is paying for. Leaving it out of the price is the most expensive mistake in this craft.
Spreading mold costs
A silicone mold isn't a one-off cost, and it isn't free either. It wears out. The sensible way to handle it is to spread its price across the number of pours you'll realistically get before it clouds, tears or loses its shine.
An eighteen dollar mold that's good for roughly sixty pours costs about thirty cents a piece. Enter it in the calculator as a material costing $18 with a package quantity of 60, used once per piece, and the math takes care of itself. Be conservative about the lifespan. Heat, demolding stress and aggressive release agents shorten it faster than most makers expect.
Failed pours belong in the price
Resin fails in ways other crafts don't. Bubbles surface overnight, humidity leaves a tacky patch, a piece cures cloudy, an inclusion shifts as it sets. Those pieces cost you exactly as much to make as the good ones and earn you nothing.
Handle it through your batch yield instead of a fudge factor. If a batch of eight reliably gives you seven sellable pieces, enter seven. Your cost per piece rises to match reality, and the suggested price rises with it. That's the correct answer, not a pessimistic one.
Questions makers ask
How much should I charge for resin art?
Multiply your true cost per piece by four for retail. For a typical coaster or small tray, costs usually land between $3 and $8 once you include epoxy, pigment, the mold's share, packaging and your finishing time, which puts retail around $12 to $32. Larger pieces and long finishing times push it well above that. Use the calculator above with your own supplier prices.
How do I account for molds in my resin pricing?
Spread the mold's cost across the number of pours you expect to get from it. Enter it as a material: the package cost is what the mold cost, the package quantity is the number of pours it should last, and you use one per piece. An $18 mold rated for 60 pours works out at about $0.30 per piece.
How do I price failed or wasted resin pours?
Skip the fudge percentage and reduce your batch yield instead. If eight pours reliably give you seven sellable pieces, enter seven as the units per batch. The failed piece's cost then gets spread across the ones you can sell, which is exactly what happens in reality.
Should I charge for sanding and finishing time?
Yes, and it's usually the largest labor cost in resin work. Mixing and pouring takes minutes. Demolding, sanding edges, polishing and inspecting is where the hours go. Include every one of those hours in your hours-per-batch figure at a real hourly rate.
How much epoxy resin do I need for a piece?
That's a volume question, not a pricing one, and it depends on your mold's dimensions. Work the volume out with a resin volume calculator, or fill the mold with water and measure it, then bring the ounces per piece back here to cost it.
What is a good wholesale price for resin pieces?
Typically twice your cost per piece, which leaves a shop room to double it and still land near your retail price. Resin is labor-heavy, so check the per-batch profit before accepting a wholesale order. A thin margin across a large order can mean many hours of sanding for very little money.
How do I know if my resin prices are too low?
Compare your cost-based price against what similar pieces actually sell for. Finished resin work often sells for well above what the materials suggest, because buyers are paying for the hours of finishing, not the epoxy. If the market pays more than your costs require, you're leaving money on the table for identical work. Type a market price into the calculator above and it will show you the gap.
